“No, I had two options,” he said expressionlessly. “Let you die or be taken. As attracted to you as I am, I wasn’t about to allow myself to fall into Jenkins’s hands. I’d have seen you dead first.”

Atienne exhaled harshly. “I guess you don’t really have the empathic abilities my brother thought you had. Empaths don’t kill so easily.”

He suppressed a sigh. He hadn’t meant to hurt Atienne, and having his trust mattered more to him than he could afford. This was the first time he’d wanted to ask forgiveness even though he knew the more distance between them the better they’d both be. He wasn’t the kind of man Atienne needed in his life.

Kinsey pulled a bur out of Atienne’s back. “The kids are broken and desensitized by some of the cruelest people, Atienne,” he said softly, recalling his own training. “They take everything good as if they’re feeding off it, and they twist it into something cruel.”

“Kinsey—”

“Some minds are dark, but there is a light that shines inside their soul. Only it’s buried deep, but in other souls, there is no light. It hasn’t been extinguished. It’s just black and it’s a poison that infects every corner of every mind it touches.” He kept his tone even, but Kinsey could hear the anger vibrating in his words. He’d been inside those children’s minds, but more importantly he’d been through what they had gone through.

Atienne grimaced as the last bur was pulled free and seconds later he felt a cool gel applied to his painful skin.

“That poison slowly kills those who can’t fight it, or it destroys them in one of two ways.” Kinsey applied a bandage. The bandage had a light coating of antibiotic that would seep into Atienne’s system via the skin while the gel he’d put on moments ago would numb the pain.

“What are they?” Atienne asked. “The ways the poison kills.”

“Physical death or emotional death,” he answered. “Some of those kids never had a chance, and some of the men and women working there never did either. Truth is, though, you can’t walk into an abyss like that and come out untouched even if your soul is intact.”
